I believe that most of us crave adventure. We want our lives to make us feel. We crave the bittersweet excitement brought on by uncertainty.
But we also want safety. And comfort. Just enough.
We are torn between “more” and “just enough.”
And I also think that a lot of people waste their lives contemplating the idea of more but never pursuing it.
One of my favorite quotes goes like this: “Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.”
Ambrose Redmon said that.
Fear is an impulse, or like the tattoo that says, “Fear is the mind killer.” Frank Herbert said that. In Dune. So you can’t stop being afraid, but you can fight fear, you can control it.
I think about Shalini. About all the wonderful artists I have met over the years who gave up on their art and settled for a job they don’t particularly enjoy.
Playing it safe is the cruelest ways to die.
Of course, some of you might think about being responsible…
Well, let me tell you this: you are going to die. There’s nothing tragic about it. It’s just a fact.
So you might as well do what the hell you want with your life.
We lie to ourselves just as much as we lie to others. We find excuses: to be lazy, to give up, to worry, to cry on someone’s shoulders.
But we pay for those lies. We pay for the lies we tell ourselves in the form of the lives we lead. In the form of the gnawing feeling of missing something and not knowing what it is; a feeling that will haunt us until the day we die, when we’ll finally close our eyes with way too many “what ifs” to find any sort of peace.

“When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.

Live free or die trying sounds a bit extreme, but it’s the only way to live a life you’re proud of. To be able at any moment to keep your head high, look yourself in the mirror, and say that you are someone you’ve always wanted to be and how good it feels to achieve such a feat.
What is worth dying for? To you? What is worth living for…
If you don’t know, I urge you to find the answer.
Figure out what is it that makes you feel alive, what you’d sacrifice the rest of your life for without a moment’s doubt.
It will all be worth it.

The real thing I have found after having three different career tracks was only one of them I loved and was a passion. If you find the passion in a thing, hold on tight. The ride will be tremendous but the challenges may be severe. Mine were. I gave up that passion and moved on to doing IT. It let me retire and travel the rest of my life. But I always wonder at what cost. IT was just a means to an end. I never particularly enjoyed it so what I have come to realize is that I spent decades doing a thing for a payoff that was not enjoyment or passion. It was more about being able to leave and never do it again
Such is life. I still miss the passion thing but I’m thankful to what happened after so I could leave on my terms.

Yes, it is of course the way – to work with what you love and in many societies it is possible to make that choice.
All your quotes and your own writing points to this and also compare the safe way of saving
for retirement and then have fun. Fact is of course that we can only live each day, don’t know all these planned tomorrows.
This doesn’t mean to live without taking on any responsibility, it does however mean to dare.
To dare go against what is expected, what is best paid, which job has the best pension…..
We all have to make this choice.

I’d love to live a life of free choice and passion of the heart fulfillment. Alas, responsibility to loved ones takes precedence. And so, I must slave at job I hate for money that they need. To do otherwise would abandon them and their own aspirations.

“Playing it safe is the cruelest ways to die.” — Doing what you love for a living, especially if it’s art (art, writing, music, etc) is terrifying to some. I’ll be the first to admit that I got a chemistry degree over a writing one because I wanted a steady paycheck. It’s was devastating, initially, because my writing went on the back burner but I’m now dedicated to finding a balance between writing and my career.
