11 Life Rules You Don’t Learn At Any Educational Institution

what they don't teach in school

Have you ever wondered about our educational system and why it’s so tedious and outdated? I mean, it keeps teaching about the same syllabus it taught our grandparents and the people before them.

School is a valuable experience for sure for about the first 5 or so years. Once you learn how to read, write and do basic math, you’ve learned 80% of what you need to go out and create your life on your terms.

It’s cliche at this point to say that the most important things you learn in life you don’t learn in school. I know in my life, the most important things I’ve learned I had to figure out on my own as an adult.

It might look like high school and college are separated by only a few, short, glorious summer months, but the reality is very different. The two are worlds apart! There are so many valuable things that you learn almost immediately after going through the college gates that it’s remarkable. Obvious things that you would never have even considered back in school.

And still, even the college falls short about teaching valuable life skills and survival tactics which can be applied in the real world.

Despite the negativity I am reluctantly opening with here, I promise you I’m not the least bit bitter about my education. The time I spent in school and college has helped me today and has allowed me to look back and strive for more. Not only for me but for anyone else that reads my words or feels the pull to do more for the next generations.

From feeling like I needed to ‘fit in’, to realizing I in fact didn’t need to ‘fit in’ at all, every moment led me here and allowed me to grow into the person that I am. No matter how many things I learned about myself through educational institutes, there are topics I wish I’d had the chance to delve into.

Because both – a brand new school/college year and a completely revamped “digitized” learning experience (thanks to covid) are upon us – I want to state 11 rules on life for the exquisite younger crowd reading this blog right now.

People having misconceptions on life and your toughness, please read.

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeeded.

11 life rules you don’t learn at any educational institution –

Rule 1: Life is not fair…get used to it.

Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $40,000/year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a cell-phone, until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn’t have tenure.

Rule 5: No work is ‘too small’ or ‘too boring’ or ‘too demeaning’ unless it’s about to harm your self-respect or dignity. For example, working as an unpaid intern only to use the hard-earned experience for a greater job will only take you ahead in life and add to your growth + success. Money is not the only thing in life. Even if you have to work as a waiter to put yourself through school or pay off your bills while you work on a side hustle, life demands pain in return for your gain. Our grandparents had a word for it – opportunity. Never miss one! Recognize and realize it as soon as it knocks on your door!

Rule 6: If you mess up it’s not your parent’s fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes, and listening to how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents’ generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life hasn’t. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the answer right. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers and Christmas break off, and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10. Television is NOT real life. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to work.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

You’re going to go through tough times – that’s life. But I say, ‘Nothing happens to you, it happens for you.’ See the positive in negative events.

  1. I heard this in a Guiness commercial, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” It’s not even about failure at this point it’s about the effort for. I love especially the rule where you said if you think your teacher is tough wait till you get a boss. I’m kind of the opposite of that. If I’m learning a new skill, I expect my instructors to be tough or else I feel as if they don’t believe in me. Nobody gets why this is important until way after.

    1. I completely agree with you!
It’s only when we understand our limits and how to overcome them is when we start seeing positive results.
